Lutein is an antioxidant carotenoid that occurs in nature with zeaxanthin, a closely related carotenoid. As we age, the body's natural supply of this vital carotenoid can decrease, especially if dietary intake is insufficient. Lutein is a yellow carotenoid pigment produced by plants and found in our eyes in the central area of the retina, called macula. The macula is a small, concentrated collection of photosensitive cells which are responsible for focus and color differentiation. Both lutein and zeaxanthin protect the macula from degradation normally associated with aging and oxidative stress.
